808s and heartbreak review

It’s debatable whether this album was ahead of its time. However, I definitely think it’s much better than TLOP & Yeezus. This live album is what the original 808s & Heartbreak was trying to make, in this album the songs get even better than the original album, in this live album this gets more orchestral, an example is that the noise on RoboCop was replaced by violins. Also I think that Ye is minimalistic & emotional like 808’s, but is more consistent on a track to track basis. 808s & Heartbreak was an amazing album but it was not perfect. I think that Graduation also is a more ambitious & provides a better “wow factor”(albeit just as inconsistent as the project). I feel like The College Dropout, Late Registration, & MBDTF are more ambitious, contribute more to Kanye’s sound & musical progress, & are more consistent on a track to track basis.

This is probably Kanye’s most minimalistic project, which is good for the R&B-like vibe it tries to accomplish, but I don’t think it’s his best work, as the minimalism can leave the album feeling like it’s missing a “wow factor”. Kanye’s provides autotuned singing here, with the emotion that you’ll find in R&B tracks along with a faster pace & energetic production that is more rap-like. The positives of this album are that it shows Kanye’s versatility as an artist, and provides a breath of fresh air from traditional Rap and R&B music. "Bad News" is a densely layered track that takes an almost emo approach (in a good way, if that’s possible), and Paranoid indulges Kanye’s fetish for the 80s with synth-heavy melodies. Lyrically, Kanye wanders into new poetic territory with lines like “ and that haunted me, all the way home.” It works in part because it’s surprising to hear such ambient soul come from Kanye’s mouth (so to speak), but "Love Lockdown" is predictable compared to the rest of 808s, an album that sometimes sounds more like Coldplay than the work of a man who can’t be told nothin'. I loved this album back in 2008 but ,compared to Wests subsequent albums, 'My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy' and 'Yeezus', this album is ordinary and seems designed for radio. The album is really uneven and has innovative moments and plain boring moments. (How many other rappers could say that if we can continue to call Kanye a “rapper?”) " Love Lockdown" takes a more eclectic approach, floating on a repetitive piano line and sparse bass before exploding into a drum-heavy chorus. 808s and Heartbreak was Kanye Wests first real attempt at a concept album. If we take away one lesson from this album it’s that Kanye doesn’t have to rap in order to make hits.
